A patiently seated elephant seal sitting in front of a hospital. An unexpected image that’s meant to make you smile. The first joke? The name. The Homonculus Loxodontus is actually a Mirounga. The mythical elephant-like statue is a permanent resident of the Leiden University Medical Center, but the work of art has been all over the world. From Ganesh to the African myths about elephants, gigantic animals capture our imagination. However, the African elephant is about to follow in the footsteps of the mammoth. The Loxodonta Africana becomes a Homonculus Loxodontus. Sadly, a lot less funny than a seated elephant seal.
